Students will develop the ability to locate craniometric reference points and their relationship to the structures of the brain. The study will begin with the encompassing the ossification sites and ossification times of the major cranial base bones, as well as the closure times of the fontanel. We will explore some of the symptoms and conditions that point to the possible need for craniosacral work to these eight areas of the brain. The class will continue with naming the functions of the hypothalamus and thalamus glands and how they pertain to craniosacral work. We will develop skills for contacting the sphenoid, parietals, and temporals as a way of accessing the hypothalamus and thalamus glands. The class will discuss the role of the mesencephalon in regulating the central nervous system. Students will demonstrate the ability to perform a craniosacral treatment to access the mesencephalon via the forth ventricle. By class completion, students will have given and received a complete craniosacral work session with a focus on the brain and central nervous system, with emphasis on the eight areas of the brain of the greatest importance and interest in manual therapy and craniosacral work.
